Hi, reader!
Today’s trivia: Take the word “startling”. Remove one letter at a time, always leaving a valid English word, until one letter remains. What’s the sequence?
With that, welcome to the 121st newsletter! This one is all about Phone Calls.
A voicemail.
On Father’s Day, I received the following voicemail from a friend:
“Hey Clay, just wanted to say I know today is bittersweet for you as I’m sure you’re thinking about your dad. I didn’t know your dad, but I do know that he would be really proud of the dad you are to your boys. You are honoring him with how your care for them and prioritize them. Just wanted you to know I appreciate how you do life and I’m thinking of you and grateful for your friendship!”
A thought.
What a voicemail, right!?
After I wiped my tears away and expressed my sincere gratitude (with a return phone call), it really got me thinking:
How rare is it to get a phone call like that?
Or just a phone call?
The easy thing to do is to send a text.
“Happy Birthday!”
“Happy Father’s Day!”
“Happy Mother’s Day!”
We (myself included) do that because it’s easier and quicker than calling someone.
Don’t get me wrong, it is a nice little dopamine hit to receive a text from someone who is thinking of you.
However.
We are only a few weeks removed from Father’s Day. I know I received texts from plenty of friends and family wishing me a Happy Father’s Day. Who from? I cannot remember for certain.
But I remember the phone call.
Who in your life can you call?
A quote.
“It’s important to slow down, every now and then, for no other reason than to call someone to say ‘Hi.’ It doesn’t have to be a long conversation. Just calling out of the blue does more to let someone know you still care about them than nearly anything else.”
Answer: Startling → Starting → Staring → String → Sting → Sing → Sin → In → I
Love this! Happy Father's Day! And I agree, I am sure your Father would be very proud of you.
