Building lululemon with Chip Wilson - The Tim Ferriss Show
In 1998, Chip Wilson founded lululemon, which created a new category of apparel called “athleisure”. Tim Ferriss, one of my favorite podcast hosts, interviews Chip as he walks through his life and how he built one of the most successful companies in the world.
Chip’s philosophy centers around being in the now and leading with integrity. From the beginning, Chip ensured that lululemon operated with integrity. He defines integrity as:
“Doing what I say I will do when I say I will do it and do it in the expected way. And if I can’t get it done, then I have to clean up my mess, and be responsible for that mess.”
From day 1, this is how lululemon has operated across the world - and the results speak for themselves.
A thought.
Most of us have seen the motivational pictures hanging in meeting rooms and school hallways with a single word (i.e. courage, goals, integrity) and a quote (like below).
Despite integrity being such a core value for so many, I bet if I asked 100 readers to select an image and a quote for the word ‘integrity’, I would receive 100 different answers. Notwithstanding, these answers would all likely revolve around “doing the right thing”.
But what’s the right thing? Defining what’s right comes from our gut, and there are 7.7 billion guts in the world. Our gut is curated from our unique perspective, lessons learned from loved ones and the experiences we have with those we surround ourselves with.
I like to pull the word 'grit’ out of inteGRITy. You must have grit to have integrity. Integrity is about doing the right thing and many times doing the right thing is hard. It takes courage, determination and grit.
Integrity will be uniquely defined by each person who reads this. Despite that, I’m confident we each have the capacity to act with integrity when required.
A quote.
