Hi, reader!
Need something light and fun? This is one of my favorite scrolls in a while: 30 Animals That Look Like They’re About To Drop The Hottest Albums Of The Year. My favorite: #10: The Electronic Rock Penguins.
With that, welcome to the 44th newsletter! This one is all about irrationality.
A read.
Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely
Dan argues that humans are exactly that, predictably irrational.
For example, if we are given the choice of 3 things and 2 of them are similar, we will choose the best of the similar.
What option would you choose?
Option 1: A weekend in Paris, everything paid
Option 2: A weekend in Paris, everything paid (except lunch)
Option 3: A weekend in Rome, everything paid
Most of us will pick option 1 because we can relate it to option 2.
(Hopefully you weren’t a maximizer and didn’t agonize over that decision)
A thought.
Some (irrational) things us humans tend to do:
We overvalue what we already have. Think about the faded shirt you would never buy in a store but just can’t seem to part ways with.
We focus on what we may lose vs what we may gain. Think about the job you’re worried about leaving.
We let price have an effect on our experience. We typically feel better after taking a higher priced medicine (even if it’s a placebo).
Which of these (irrational) things do you tend to do?
A quote.
“Pay less attention to what [people] say. Just watch what they do.”
