Hi, reader!
Trivia for today: Each year, Finland hosts a unique world championship where participants see how far they can throw what item? Hint: you have probably wanted to throw yours at some point.
With that, welcome to the 86th newsletter! This one is all about Doors.
A concept.
One-way door vs. Two-way door
One-way doors are doorways you walk through that are hard to walk back through. Once you walk through them, that’s it. Door is closed. Locked up. Virtually no turning back. If you want to turn back, it will be at a considerable cost to you. Before walking through this door, you must give careful consideration, involve others in the decision and seriously weigh the pros and cons. Take your time with these doors.
Two-way doors are doorways you walk through that are relatively easy to walk back through. You step through this door and the door remains ajar for your potential return. If you don’t like where the door leads, you can walk back to where you came from with minimal cost (monetary, mental, time, etc.) to you. It is low risk to walk through this door. Don’t spend too much time thinking about these doors. Don’t overanalyze – take action!
A thought.
How can you apply this to your life?
Well, when faced with an opportunity or decision, ask yourself, what type of door is this?
Scenario 1: You’re deciding whether or not to have kids.
This is a one-way door. Once you have them, it’s hard to give them back.
Scenario 2: You’re deciding whether or not to join the gym.
This is a two-way door. You can try it out and then cancel or stop going any time.
Scenario 3: You’re thinking about quitting your job.
This is a one-way door. Once you quit - it’s extremely unlikely you’re coming back.
Scenario 4: You’re thinking about buying a house.
This is a two-way door. If you don’t like the home you bought, sell it. You may lose a little from closing costs and commissions. Or you may luck out with appreciation. Regardless, the cost is typically much lower than you think.
Once you know what type of door it is, now you can consider:
- How much time should I dedicate to making this decision?
- Who should I involve in this decision?
- What happens if I don’t walk through the door?
So…What decision are you facing? Is it a one-way door or a two-way door?
A quote.
"It is not the things we do in life that we regret on our death bed. It is the things we do not. I assure you I've done a lot of really stupid things, and none of them bother me. All the mistakes, and all the dopey things, and all the times I was embarrassed — they don't matter. What matters is that I can kind of look back and say: Pretty much any time I got the chance to do something cool I tried to grab for it — and that's where my solace comes from."
